Our New Kitchen

My brothers had been telling me I needed a newer, more accessible kitchen for some time. In Febbruary of 2008 we started serious planning. Mike was coming in late June for neice Caroline's wedding and the plan was to do the deed the following week.

Plans were made and revised. Mike ordered the cabinets. Tom assembled them. Tom, Paul, John P. and John Carney did the demo, stripping the room out to the walls in the weeks before the install. Heidi and I started buying lots of stuff. Heidi scraped and sanded and painted. We put in a lot of new wiring.

The kitchen is a lot more useable for me. The install was a real party. Very hard work and a few very humorous moments.

The southwest corner of our 'old' kitchen - too narrow for Heidi to work at the sink to my right and have me roll behind her.

After remodeling it looks like north wall was moved out... Lots more room to move and cook, even with Heidi and me both in there.

Mike and Uncle Joe installing cabinets on Tuesday. The day Joe went to his train club meeting, but ended up qt the nephews maiking sure they got it right.

Another look at that southwest corner - the old cabinets...

... and the new ones.

The southeast corner of the old kitchen. The table has been removed and the rolling microwave cart is in its place in the background.

The table is a temporary replacement. Tom is working on restoring Grandma Hickey's old kitchen table for me. It is smaller than our old table, but slightly larger than this temporary one.

A better look at the east wall - it is yellow. We weren't sure how the yellow would go with the white tile and blue accents. Oh, and the red an white ceiling lights.

Once the paint was in it seemed to look okay. Lots of primary color.

A closer view of the tile in the southwest corner. The blue WilsonArt counters were made by Columbus Case Goods. No backsplash and a beveled front edge.

The counter on the south wall is normal counter height.

The tile behind the range goes from floor to hood. The hood vents directly through the wall to the outside.

Had to move gas lines, elecrterical and hot air register to move the range to this wall.

The nine foot long, eighteen inch deep counter on the north wall in the left foreground is only thirty inches high - about table height. The cabinets are twelve inches deep and float six inches above the floor.

Enough room through the kitchen to work as the chair rolls through. Heidi and I can both cook there.
